Improved hydration and properties of magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement using sodium silicate as an additive

Magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) cement has many advantages, such as high early strength, low thermal conductivity, excellent fire and corrosion resistance. However, its strength is less stable water resistance relatively poor, which limits wide use in civil engineering. In this study, the MOS specimens with different amount of sodium silicate (SS) an additive were manufactured before subjected to a series laboratory tests, including dispersion SEM, XRD Isothermal Calorimetry analysis evaluate their modified properties. The experimental results show that increase SS consistently reduces initial setting time, fluidity performance paste because accelerated endothermic reaction during hydration process MOS. An addition up 0.5% mass MgO significantly increases long-term cement. This attributes fact enhances microstructure refines coarse pores hardened paste, thus forms much denser although it does not change category phase composition
